“open, speak
live, bind.”
For centuries, five wolves protected The Waking Caverns: a series of underground caves, deep beneath the surface of the Isle, essentially based directly underneath Melusine Lake. The guardians were Aperio, ‘open’; Fatus, ‘speak’; Degero, ‘live’; Necto, ‘bind’; with the last known only as The Fifth. Within the caverns were inscriptions and tablets, that would tell the lucky reader exactly how to perform the ancient ritual, and The Five were sent to protect it.
For The Five, Malaysia’s arrival meant trouble. To decoy her from ever finding The Waking Caverns, and, in turn, from finding the rites for the Almos Ritual, they separated themselves from their bodies somewhere near the mountains, then their souls returned to seal the entrance to the Caverns. They locked themselves inside, each travelling to their own cavern, and falling into a deep sleep.
Malaysia took little notice of the five apparently dead wolves: in fact, she knows nothing of the Caverns. It conveniently slipped the minds of the elders to tell her the legend, but it is almost as if she has a sixth sense. In a completely unrelated event – the drought, actually, to be specific – the Kol have seized Melusine Lake, and are under orders from Malaysia not to allow any Tundes or nomads to drink, unless they have something worth giving in return.
Puppies. Magic. Hostages. Slaves.
And, by pure chance – legends.
“All that sleeps, must wake.”
