Aww thanks! Don't even get me started on season five. Sooo much went wrong there. But the thing about Irina, I agree that they went a bit overboard, but at the same time I think that was almost part of her character all along. She loved her daughter and her husband, but she was obsessed with power, and that ultimately really messed her up -nods-
But still, they RANDOMLY made her all "IMMA DESTROY THE WOOORLD!" just because they needed another bad guy for the series finale. -rolls eyes-

Title: Broken Wings. Author: Moi. Rating: PG-13ish for violence and language. Fandom: Maximum Ride / Alias Pairings: Max x Fang, Sydney x Vaughn, ELLA x IGGY!, and possible Irina x Jack. Chapter Summary: Time for a little payback. The Flock and Sydney infiltrate the Narva labs in pursuit of the antidote...but what they find there is much more than anyone expected. Notes: DUDES. I even surprised MYSELF writing this. I intended to go in a COMPLETELY different direction with the plot, but then I had this crazy, crazy idea that I couldn't pass up. So...yeah. And it took forever to write this chapter, too. For some reason I always struggle with action-y stuff...
Oh, and in this story, Ella's gonna be like, a year older...so around 13 and a half.
Here’s the thing about these neck-risking, heat-of-the-moment missions we always seem to find ourselves on: you can do it a hundred times and think you’re pretty much used to it, but when someone’s life is on the line, your perspective changes completely.
Going into that lab and knowing that we’d lose Angel if we messed up created a kind of tension we didn’t feel that often. But I was determined. Anna Espinosa has messed with the wrong mutant kids. And she was about to find out.
I gripped the arm of the airplane chair testily. I would have been way more cool with this if we’d just been able to fly in ourselves. But without the intel the CIA was going to provide, we had no idea where this place actually was.
So here we were on an official government airplane—the whole Flock. Me, Fang, Iggy, Gazzy, Nudge, and Angel. Angel wouldn’t be going in, of course, but there was no way I was going to leave her alone back at the safehouse. She’d be okay here…I had to believe that.
As for Gazzy and Nudge, I had tried to convince them to stay behind, but they wouldn’t hear any of it. They wanted to help. I couldn’t blame them.
I stared out the window across from me and frowned. Somewhere down there was the lab that Jeb Batchelder, my own dad, had once worked in. He never told us about any of this…ever. Which made me wonder, how many other things had he ‘forgotten’ to tell us? He wanted me to trust him, to believe that he was on my side, but how was I supposed to do that when he had so many secrets?
I needed answers, but they’d have to wait.
“Whoa…my ears are popping. Feel that?” Nudge said randomly, probably trying to break the silence.
“That’ll happen when we’re going higher…or lower.” Iggy explained knowledgably. “Cabin pressure.”
Nudge considered for a second. “Cool!” But even her usually chipper tone sounded somehow empty. We were definitely all on edge.
Suddenly, Sydney came back into the cabin, Agent Vaughn not far behind her. “The pilot says we’re in Estonia now.” She announced. “Ten more minutes and we’ll be flying over the base. Everyone okay?”
“Peachy.” I nodded. I just wanted to get off this plane and get into action.
“Let’s go over the plan one more time.” Agent Vaughn said, looking around the cabin. “When the pilot brings us low enough, you jump—Syd, you’ll have a parachute. The rest of you will be flying. Assuming Derevko’s coordinates are correct,” He paused, glancing at Sydney. “That’ll get you past basic perimeter security. Sydney will enter the base disguised as a genetic specialized doctor. We’ve sent in a message telling them she’ll be visiting…with one of her ‘test subjects’—which is why one of you will be going in with her. That’ll give you clearance to most of the building. Once safely inside, she’ll plant a signal jammer that will cause a two minute security black out. In that time, the rest of you will get inside through one of the facility’s side entrances, and take it from there.”
Kinda complicated, huh? Well, once you’ve got it drilled into your head about twenty times, it starts to make sense.
“Any questions?” Agent Vaughn finished up.
“Let’s just do this.” I answered restlessly.
Sydney stood up. “I’m gonna go change, then.” She said quietly, disappearing into the back room of the plane and effectively leaving us in an awkward face-to-face with Agent Vaughn.
He cleared his throat. “I’ll leave you to get ready.” He muttered to the room at large, and headed back into the cockpit.
“Well…” Fang was the first to speak. “This should be…interesting.”
“Piece of cake.” Gazzy said determinedly, puffing out his chest. “We’ll beat this guy. No problem. Right?”
I’d been staring at my hands, but at that moment I looked up and met Gazzy’s gaze. I had to hand it to him, he was one brave kid. I smiled. “Yeah. No problem, Gasman.” I assured him.
Nudge had her face pressed against one of the windows. “It’s so dark.” She commented, squinting to peer outside. “I can’t see the city lights any more. Now it’s just…creepy.”
“Well, creepy or not, we’re going out.” Fang said grimly. He stood up and walked toward the airplane door. “Can’t be long now.”
And it wasn’t. A few minutes later, I had herded most of the Flock towards the door when Sydney reappeared. Her disguise consisted of a long, curly blonde wig, dark-rimmed glasses, and a white lab jacket that kind of creeped me out. Scientists were still a touchy subject for me.
“We’ll be on target in thirty seconds.” She reported, equipping her helmet and parachute pack. “Is everyone ready?”
“Definitely.” I replied without hesitation. I glanced back at Angel, who was still crouched in her chair. “We’ll be back really soon, okay? You’ll be fine.”
Angel nodded meekly, watching us with wide eyes. I smiled at her one last time before turning back to the door. Sydney took a deep breath, yanked it open, and leaped out.
After only a second’s pause, I nodded. “Okay, Gazzy—go. Nudge, you’re after him.” We were all used to flying, of course, but none of us had jumped out of a moving plane too many times, and I wanted to make sure they got out alright. We didn’t have time for hesitation.
Gazzy stepped forward. He hesitated, sucked in a breath, and pushed himself forward. I saw him spread his wings the instant he was out, almost gliding downward. Nudge gulped, then sprang out after him.
Iggy was next. “Well,” he said wryly, “At least I don’t have to worry about looking down.” And before I had the chance to roll my eyes, he was out as well.
I looked at Fang, who was grinning back at me. “See you on the ground.” He muttered, before zipping out the door without so much as blinking.
I watched his black wings, almost invisible against the night sky. I kept my eyes trained on him, ignored the lurch in my stomach, and jumped.
My wings opened almost automatically, immediately slowing my fall. The night air was freezing, and even though the plane had been lowered enough to make the jump possible, the air was still kind of thin up here. I needed to get lower as quickly as I could.
I had to admit, though, it was pretty wild. I could just feel how high up I was. Below, I could see the rest of the flock circling, and even further down the tiny dot of a parachute. I tipped my head downward, flapped my wings, and dove.
“THIS IS TOTALLY AWESOME!” I heard Gazzy whoop as I swooped downward further. We were all getting closer and closer to the ground, slowly but surely…
And then, very clearly, I could see tree tops. “Heads up!” I called out, pulling up about fifeteen feet above them to choose my descent route more carefully. Gliding between the branches, I hit the ground with a soft thud. A perfect landing.
Gazzy and Iggy weren’t far behind, and then came Fang and Nudge. I looked around, checking to make sure we were all okay.
“We’ve got to do that more often!” Nudge grinned, trying to tame her windblown hair.
“We’ll see.” It’d been fun, but personally, I wasn’t feeling the urge to get in another airplane. I trusted my own wings more than some mechanical ones. I glanced over my shoulder. “Where’s Sydney?”
“I saw her landing over there,” Fang reported, gesturing behind him. “Open field.”
We trudged past a few pine trees into a more open, grassy area. I could make out the CIA agent cutting away her parachute a few meters away. She looked up and saw us. “Just missed the trees. How was your landing?”
“Wicked!” exclaimed Nudge.
Sydney nodded. “The lab is about a quarter mile from here. We’ll all walk over there, and then one of you has to come inside with to disable security.”
“I’ll go.” Gazzy offered immediately, but I stepped forward. I didn’t care what anyone said, going in there was going to be dangerous. I wasn’t going to put another member of the Flock in that kind of peril. Not again.
“No. I’ll go.” I said.
“Hold on.” Fang said sharply, but I gave him a pointed look and cut him off.
“It’s fine, Fang. You take care of these guys.”
He glared at me, then opened his mouth to argue, but this time Sydney stepped in.
“We don’t have time to argue! Every second we waste makes our shot at the antidote smaller.” She hissed urgently.
We both knew she was right, but Fang was still looking moody. We didn’t speak at all as we headed out towards the lab. I wished he would stop being so stubborn. I didn’t need more to worry about on top of everything else right now.
I could see the dim lights of the few windows that were built into the round, stone building. It looked tall, cold, and foreboding. Definitely School material.
I adjusted my intercom earpiece. They were CIA technology, and we’d all been given them to keep in contact on the mission. “Everybody ready?” I whispered, and heard murmured agreements from the Flock.
“Stay hidden until we call you.” I reminded them, before following Sydney out onto the stone pavement.
We walked in silence for a moment, before Sydney paused. I stopped and looked at her questioningly.
“This close to the building, you can bet they’ll have cameras. You’ll have to act unconscious.” She told me hesitantly.
I nodded. I could already tell this was going to get messy. Slowly, I knelt to the ground, and, wincing against the cold of the cement, I laid down. I felt Sydney grab the back of my shirt collar. “Sorry about this.” She said apologetically.
I smirked. I had done things way crazier than this before. “I’m used to it.”
It was an interesting little trip, being dragged into a School facility. In any other situation I probably would have been kicking and screaming, and even now I actually had to fight my instincts in order to hold still. But it was only a moment before I heard a code being entered, and then we were inside.
I grimaced silently as that distinct, science lab smell hit me hard.
I heard a deep, male voice demand something in what sounded like Russian, and then I heard Sydney reply in the same language. The man laughed suddenly.
“Ah. You are a local?”
“Dr. Kaisa Rebane.” Sydney answered in a frosty Estonian accent. “I believe you have my visit scheduled?”
I heard brief typing. “Yes, yes. Your experiment…”
“She is heavily sedated. Nothing to worry about. Now, if you would show me to the lab?”
“Of course, doctor.”
I could hardly believe it. They were making this too easy!
I was dragged through a set of doors that slid open on command, which was when I dared to open my eyes just a sliver. I couldn’t see the man…he was probably in front of us.
“I’ll inform Ms. Espinosa of your arrival now. I’m sure she is eager to meet—“
Then, all at once, Sydney suddenly let me go and—
WHAM! The slamming sound didn’t leave much to the imagination. The man shouted and toppled backwards, almost tripping over me. I jumped up, crackled my knuckles, and punched him hard against the wall. He was out like a light.
“See if you can find any keys on him.” Sydney bent down to search the employee. “We’ll need them to get into the security room.”
I bent down and checked his front coat pocket, and felt cold metal against my fingers. “Got ‘em.” I announced, handing them to Sydney.
“Great!” She stood up, motioned to me, and headed a little ways down the hall. The security door had a lock, but also a coding panel. I stopped short, staring at it. I didn’t remember hearing about a security room code. But for some reason, Sydney didn’t seem phased.
“Base camp, this is Mountaineer. I’m going radio silent while I jam the signals.” She said into her earpiece, before clicking it off.
“So…” I began, but Sydney held up a hand.
“Mom?” She whispered. “We need the access code for the security room.”
What the…? I looked around to see who she was talking to, but the hallway was empty. And then, I saw it. Sydney was wearing a second earpiece. And it definitely didn’t look CIA.
She paused for a moment, and then entered a five-digit code. The door clicked open. It didn’t take a genius to realize what she’d done.
As we entered the room, I turned to her. “Does the CIA know you…?”
Sydney shook her head mutely, looking worried. “For an operation like this, Anna wouldn’t have the time or money to install new security measures. And I doubt she’d want to, since the School’s built-in security works so well. My mother is the only one who knows how to get past it.” She explained.
Great, except for the part where we were pretty much putting our lives in the hands of a known criminal. But that little conversation was cut short by the tiny fact that inside the security room were two men, standing with guns pointed straight at us.
I didn’t think, I just tackled the nearest one head-on. I guess he was a little surprised to see a part-bird kid lunging at him, because he hesitated long enough for me to get him on the ground. The other guy turned his gun on me, which gave Sydney enough time to attack him.
I twisted the guy’s arm so that his gun went skidding away, and then I stomped hard on his face. There was a crack that probably meant his nose was broken, and then he was out cold.
I turned around just in time to see Sydney rip the gun out of the other guy’s hands, and bring the handle down hard against his head.
“I’m guessing that was the easy part.” I said tensely.
She nodded mutely, still gripping the gun. “Can you make sure no one else is coming? I’m going to try to hack the system.”
I slipped silently over to the door, closed it, and waited just behind it. If anyone else was coming, I’d hear them long before they’d even know I was there.
It only took Sydney a few minutes to plant the jammer. “Ready.” She breathed at last.
I spoke into my own earpiece. “Guys? Security’s off. You have two minutes to get your butts in here!” I called.
“Roger.” I heard Fang say jokingly.
“We’ll make it in one and a half.” Iggy added.
Sydney and I headed out into the opposite hall and past various twists and turns, where we’d be set to meet the Flock when they came in through a side entrance. We made pretty good time, and soon I spotted the others running towards us.
“Any problems?” I asked.
“We had to take out two guards by the door, but they were easy.” Gazzy boasted. “What now?”
“I’m going to head back to the security room.” Sydney told us. “I can monitor the cameras to get you past any…obstacles. And we might need to hack security again.”
“I’ll go with you!” Nudge offered cheerfully. “I’m really good at hacking stuff.”
“Sounds good.” I nodded, taking a deep breath to prepare myself. This was it.
“Remember, we’re meeting on the roof for the extraction.” Sydney added. “Good luck.” And with that, she and Nudge took off back down the hall that led to the security rooms.
I turned to look at Fang, Iggy, and Gazzy. “Here we go.”
Fang glanced around. “Uh. Where are we going, exactly?” He asked dryly.
He was right. There were actually a lot of doors to choose from. How many different experiments could they run in all of these labs?...Actually, scratch that. I didn’t want to know. “Apparently, the treatment labs are towards the back of this place. So…if we keep following the next hall down, it should get us there.”
“Assuming Anna hasn’t, you know, decided to redecorate.” Iggy commented lightly.
I rolled my eyes. “Thanks, Ig.”
We headed in what I hoped was the right direction, through the maze-like halls. It was kinda confusing, but overall pretty quiet. There were no guards anywhere. Wasn’t this place supposed to be known for their security? So…either they were all busy doing something big, or this was a trap. I didn’t like either option.
“Nice place.” Fang said sarcastically. “Brings back memories, doesn’t it?”
I looked from the pale, chipping walls to the dimly lit ceiling. “Oh yeah. Good times.”
“Hey Max!” I heard Nudge’s voice in my earpiece. “We’re in the security room! We can see you on the cameras! Gosh, this is cool.” She gushed.
Well, at least someone was having fun. “Cool. We ARE going the right way, right?” I asked.
“It looks like it.” Nudge answered. “There’s supposed to be a big, invisible laser grid right in that hall! But we hacked it for ya.”
“What a lifesaver.” Iggy grinned.
“Just keep going down—whoa…”
“Nudge?” I asked immediately. “What’s going on? What is it?”
I could practically hear Nudge gaping, and it wasn’t often that words failed her. It was Sydney that answered me. “Max, there’s a man coming right for you. He looks like he knows where you are.”
“What?” I tensed immediately. “Just one guy?” What kind of game was this?!
“I…I don’t know…” Sydney was sounding increasingly wary. “But he’s getting really close…oh my god…he’s right in front of you, you guys need to get out of there!”
“We can’t go back now.” Fang protested, looking at me. “We need the antidote.”
I stopped short. I could hear footsteps now.
“He has a syringe!” Hissed Sydney suddenly. “It’s—I can’t tell if it’s the same kind of injection—“
”Hide!” Gazzy yelped immediately.
“MAX!” Nudge all but screamed in my ear. “Max, it’s—“
But before she could tell me, I saw it with my own eyes. Jeb Batchelder rounded the corner just in front of us.
Everyone froze.
“Max,” He said hoarsely. “Maximum. I found you.”
Words completely failed me at that moment. Knowing that he had worked here under the School was one thing…but seeing him now, in that white lab coat, only meant one thing: He was working for Anna.
“I don’t believe it.” I spluttered suddenly. “Is this why you’ve suddenly decided to shut up in my head?! This whole time you’ve been working for…for her. You put Angel in danger.” I felt like punching him.
But Jeb was shaking his head. “You need to believe me. Yes, I’ve worked here, undercover. When I heard that someone had taken an interest in your Flock, I knew I had to stop them from pursuing you. Anna took me on as the building expert, because I’ve worked here before.”
“Bull!” snapped Fang at once.
“There’s no time to explain!” Jeb was looking extremely pale. “Yes, I knew what they were going to do to Angel. But I couldn’t have warned you…it would have blown my cover. And I needed to stay—“
I wasn’t ready to hear another excuse. For one thing, there wasn’t time. “We’ll deal with you later. Now get out of our way!”
“Max, I have the antidote you’re looking for.” He suddenly held out a syringe full of clear, thick-looking liquid. I stopped dead, staring at it.
“And we’re just supposed to trust that that’s the real thing?” I demanded.
“Why would I ever want to hurt Angel?”
“BECAUSE YOU’VE BEEN WORKING WITH THESE PEOPLE ALL ALONG!” I snarled, stepping forward just as Fang grabbed my arm to keep me back. “If you were really on our side, you would have destroyed this place before any of this ever happened.”
Jeb put his hand over his eyes wearily. “Yes, I know.” He sighed. “And I had every intention of doing just that. But when I gained access to the labs for the first time…I discovered something that...that..I couldn't leave. I had to tell you...and this was the only way to bring you here." He explained.
This wasn’t making any sense. I frowned deeper. “What are you talking about?!”
Jeb put the syringe in my hand. “You won’t believe me unless you see for yourself.” Turning sharply, he headed through the hall in the completely opposite direction.
I turned to the others, and they looked just as bewildered as I did.
“Stop!” I hissed at my father, charging after him. “You’re not going anywhere!”
But Jeb kept going, and soon we were all following him into an empty corridor. There was only one door at the end of it.
“Don’t go in there.” I heard Sydney warn. “There are no cameras hooked up in that room…we have no idea—“
But Jeb was already placing his finger on a small black box next to the door. There was a small chirping noise, and only then did I realize that he had just scanned his fingerprint.
He turned back towards us. “Careful.” He whispered. “They must not hear us.” And then, slowly, he opened the door just a crack.
I was the first to step forward, the first to look into the room. And what I saw almost made my heart stop. I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.
Fang stepped behind me and squinted into the room as well.
“No way…”
I almost choked on my own words. “Ella?”

xD Sorreh. I didn't even know I was going there. I was going to do this with an original character, but then I thought "Ella would have more of an impact..." and then I got this crazy idea which...well, you'll see. Heh.

Tee hee!! Oh hey, I read the new Maximum Ride!! It was AWESOME. In my opinion, it's still not on par with the first three(this environmental stuff just doesn't fit), but it was still WAY better than the fourth. Mainly because of the Faxness! They're sooo freakin adorable!!! Finally James Patterson decided to stop torturing us. Oh hey, and am I the only one who doesn't really mind Brigid? She's...interesting, and come on. It's not like Fang would EVER choose her over Max. She's just a plot device.
Anyway, on to next chapter!
Title: Broken Wings. Author: Moi. Rating: PG-13ish for violence and language. Fandom: Maximum Ride / Alias Pairings: Max x Fang, Sydney x Vaughn, Ella x Iggy, and possible Irina x Jack. Chapter Summary: Things to do: 1. Rescue an unconcious and very different Ella. 2. Live through helicopter explosion. 3. Be rescued from a Russian fugitive by a different Russian fugitive. Overall, a pretty normal night. Notes: Hey, in case you're wondering about something Syd says in this chapter, I did NOT forget about Nadia! But when this story would've taken place, she would have had no clue her sister existed, and Irina sure as heck ain't gonna tell her. xD
“Come on…” I switched the views back and forth, glaring at the multiple camera screens and praying that the room in question would show up on one of them. Going in there blind was definitely not a good idea, but at this point there was no talking them out of it. I could only hope that Max knew what she was doing.
And then I heard a gasp. “Ella?”
As soon as it came, I saw Nudge freeze, her hands still on the terminal keyboard. “What?” She blurted, obviously familiar with the name.
I frowned. “What is it? Who’s Ella?”
Nudge turned to look at me, her eyes wide. “Max’s half-sister.” She whispered.
I sat there at a loss for words. What was going on here?
Luckily, though, Nudge had enough words for both of us. “Max! What’s Ella doing here? Is she okay? What’s going on?!” She babbled all in one breath.
“She…they…oh god.” I heard Max choke. I don’t think I’d ever heard her sound so frantic before. “They’ve been experimenting on her…”
Nudge let out a gasp of her own. “Ohmygosh! This is bad! Can you get her? We have to help her!”
“Hold on, Nudge.” I put a hand on her shoulder to steady her, and then spoke into my own earpiece. “Max? What’s the security like?”
Max still sounded shaky as she spoke again, barely containing her voice to a whisper. “The room’s full of scientists…this is where they all were. I’m going to freaking kill them, those—“
“No.” I said instantly. “If they see you, our cover’s blown. We’ll never get out alive!” From the sound of things, the kids were heavily outnumbered. Going in after Ella was insane.
“Like hell.” She spat.
I took a deep breath. “Max, I’m so sorry. I promise we’ll find a way to help her, but right now there’s nothing—“
“I’m not leaving her here.” Max said viciously. “So either help me, or stay out of the way.”
I would have said something, but suddenly the screech of feedback almost burst my eardrums. I swore loudly and then immediately regretted it, remembering Nudge was standing right there. She stared at me, alarmed.
“What happened?”
I shook my head. “Uh…nothing. Sorry, my intercom malfunctioned.” I muttered. In truth, I’d just gotten about three different communication signals at once. Shortly following Max’s were two others, and now both Vaughn and Irina’s voices were in my head.
“Syd, get everyone out of there NOW, or they’ll find you. This isn’t a rescue mission!” Vaughn was saying desperately.
Though she couldn’t hear him, my mother seemed to be on a similar track. “Sydney, whatever’s happening, you need to get out of there. I can’t help you much longer.” She said hurriedly.
I didn’t reply to either of them, closing my eyes and trying to find my own thoughts through so many other voices. I didn’t grow up with any siblings, but my roommate Francie and my best friend Will were as good as any sister or brother I could have ever asked for. I tried to imagine how I would feel if something happened to either of them. What would I do to get them back?
Anything. I answered myself. There was only one decision I could make. I sighed. “Okay, listen. I’m going to pull a fire alarm. That’ll cause enough panic to get you a shot at a rescue…but then it’s going to get messy.” I told Max.
“I can handle it.” She said firmly.
I nodded. “Okay. Do whatever you can, and we’ll meet you on the rooftop for extraction.” That said, I turned to Nudge. She was already looking edgily towards the door. “I saw a fire alarm a little way down the hall. Once we pull it, it won’t take them long to realize it’s a decoy.” I warned.
Nudge shrugged. “I get it. We’re on a tight schedule…that happens a lot. I just hope Ella’s okay!” She said worriedly.
“I’m sure she will be.” I tried to smile, but I honestly had no idea whether that was true or not. Neither of us pursued it further as we headed out of the security room. The bright red that marked the alarm’s position was visible only a few feet away, probably placed specifically in case of a fire in the control room.
I paused slightly, pulled it, and then winced. The immediate screeching of the alarm blared full-volume through the hallway. “Come on!” I shouted over the wailing, and instantly Nudge and I were sprinting hard down the hall.
“How do we get upstairs?” Nudge yelled as we rounded another corner.
I hesitated, looking desperately around for stairs, or an elevator—anything. From the outside, the building hadn’t looked too tall…three stories, at the most. It wasn’t going to be a long way up, if only we could find a way…
Suddenly, I heard the far-away shouting of rough, agitated voices. “Just go! We’ll find something!” I blurted, breaking into a run again.
I wasn’t sure whether or not they knew we were here, but if they didn’t, it wouldn’t take them long to find out. If they got into the security room and checked the cameras, and found six winged kids and an American spy instead of a fire, they weren’t going to be happy.
I didn’t keep track of how long we were running for. We just kept going in hopes of finding a way up onto the roof, or the others—whichever came first.
“Look!” Nudge called suddenly. She was pointing at a small, rusted engraving on the wall. Its message was written in Estonian, but the little icon above it couldn’t have been clearer. A staircase.
We burst through the door, and started taking the stairs two and three at a time. I heard Vaughn again, and even right in my ear he was only just audible over the alarms.
“Sydney! We just got a message from your extraction team. I don’t know how they did it, but they found the helicopter. We’re running out of time!”
“Hold on!” I tried to clear my head. “Just tell them to hold on—we’re coming now.”
Only a few more stairs to go. It didn’t take us long; soon we were clearing the last few and wrenching open the door that led onto the roof.
I was instantly hit with a raging gust of air that could only be coming from helicopter blades. I squinted against the harsh roof lights at the scene unfolding in front of me. Our helicopter was hovering low in the air, not daring to land. In seconds, I saw why. A team of guards were prowling just below it, all of them carrying guns. They seemed to be hesitating, as if they were waiting for orders.
The pilot had spotted Nudge and I, and a rope was lowering down towards us.
“We can’t leave without my friends!” Nudge protested tearfully, backing away from the chopper.
I looked from her to the helicopter, and then back again. I knew she was right. No one was getting left behind. The guards hadn’t seen us yet, their attention still focused on the helicopter, so I began waving my arms at the pilot.
“Get out of here!” I mouthed at him. “Pick us up somewhere else!”
The pilot seemed to have gotten the message, because he was lifting the chopper up and away again.
“Vaughn!” I tried contacting him. “Contact the team—tell them to pick us up outside the lab perimeter—“ But then I stopped dead, staring at one of the guards with my mouth half-open. Said guard had just turned and saw me, and I realized that she wasn’t a guard at all.
“Anna!” I spat, bristling at her malicious grin.
“Get them!” I heard her shouting at the guards. “I’ll take care of the chopper.”
“No!” I started towards her, but too late. She raised her gun, took careful aim, and fired three times at the helicopter. With just a few shots, she hit exactly where the engine would have been. I barely had time to react.
“GET DOWN!” I slammed into Nudge, and we both tumbled to the ground as the helicopter exploded violently above us. Covering my face, I dared to peer out from behind my arms. It was a mess. A complete ruin. In less then ten seconds, everything had gone to hell, and now not only was our escape destroyed, but a team of dedicated CIA employees was dead. I stared in horrified disbelief.
“We’re SO screwed!” Nudge gasped, still on the ground as well. “I can’t believe she—that—what do we do?!”
The urgency in her tone reminded me that there was just no time to think about anything. Especially since Anna’s guards were already getting up off the ground, and were headed straight towards us.
“Run! We’ll find another way out!”
Nudge didn’t need telling twice. In a flash she was up, speeding towards the door, and I wasn’t far behind. I could hear the bang of gunshots behind us, and Anna barking orders. Somehow, we managed to get back to the door without being hit, and made it back into the building.
We were barely down the first flight of stairs when I heard Nudge call out. “Max! Fang! Iggy! Gazzy!”
Sure enough, there they were, headed quickly towards us.
“Where are you going?” Gazzy asked, confused.
“The helicopter—“ I breathed without wasting a second. “Anna…she destroyed it.”
Max gritted her teeth. “I swear to god. I’m gonna kill her.”
“We have to go. They’re right behind us.”
It didn’t take more than that to get everyone going. We were running down the stairs and out onto the first floor in a blink of an eye.“Fang!” Nudge cried suddenly, running over to him. “What happened to Ella?!”
It was then that I noticed what, or rather, who Fang was carrying. A girl of around thirteen was laying limply in his arms, her face pale and her eyes closed. Her form was oddly misshapen, and it only took me a moment to figure out why. I gasped.
This girl, Ella…she had wings. Not graceful, feathery wings like the others, either. Hers were clawed, shining and bat-like, and they looked as if they’d been painfully graphed onto her.
“They did this to her.” Max said, her voice trembling. “I don’t know how, or why. But they did it.”
“And we’re going to get them.” Fang reassured her firmly. “But right now, we don’t have a way out of here, and that’s gonna be a problem.”
“We’ll have to improvise.” I announced. “We’ll go out the side door you came through, and then you guys get out of here. Fly. I’ll contact the CIA for extraction—“
“No.” Max interrupted. “Look, that’s not happening—even if we tried, Agent Vaughn said it himself. They have security precautions so the experiments can’t fly out. That’s why we couldn’t fly in in the first place.”
I knew she was right, but I couldn’t see how we were going to get out of this otherwise.
“Sydney!” I heard Irina suddenly. “Go out the front door.”
I blinked, unsure whether I’d heard her right. “Are you insane?!”
“You need to trust me, however hard that may be. Do it.”
There were so many things that could go wrong with this; I wasn’t even going to begin to list them. But right now, I was desperate, and I didn’t have any other ideas. We were closest to the front door, anyway.
“Out the main doors!” I said suddenly, changing course.
I heard a collective “What?”, but I had already begun racing down the opposite hall.
It was a mark of how frantic the situation was that the Flock actually followed me without question. I just hoped that for once, this wasn’t a trick on my mother’s part.
The guards thundered behind us, still shooting wildly when they got the chance. We weren’t even trying to be subtle any more, flashing past any and all security that happened to be around. It was a mad dash for the front door, and all I could think was that once we got out, we’d have nowhere else to go.
And then we were out. Max got there first, all but ripping the door open, and then we hit the cool night air.
I stepped out onto the road, searching frantically for any vehicle we could use to escape.
“Okay, those guys are RIGHT behind us.” Iggy said warily. I knew he was right. The guards were going to find us, and we had nowhere to go except out into the darkness.
Then, suddenly, a pair of headlights blazed, and a large van came screeching out onto the road. It stopped short in front of us, and I tensed. I could just make out the figure in the van pulling something out of the glove compartment. There was a glint of metal as, too late, I realized it was a gun. And it was pointed straight at Fang and Ella.
Bang!
“NO!” Max shouted, but as Fang looked down at Ella in shock, everyone realized that neither of them had been hit. It took me a moment, but I realized what must have happened. I whipped around just in time to see a guard only five feet away fall to his knees, dropping his own weapon as he did so.
I turned back to the van. Took a step closer.
“Mom?! How did—?”
“Get in!” Irina snapped impatiently, gun still pointed out the window.
I turned to the kids. “Come on. It’s okay.” I told them, though I still sort of doubted that myself. Without wasting another second, I opened the door and jumped into the passenger’s seat.
Outside, nobody moved. Nudge and Gazzy just looked confused, while Iggy was frowning thoughtfully and Fang’s expression was unreadable. Max’s expression, however, was an accusatory glare.
“It’s okay.” I repeated again, trying to sound reassuring. “There’s no time. We don’t have another option here!”
I wasn’t sure whether it was that that convinced them, or the gunshots that once again sounded behind them, but suddenly Max gave a tight little nod, and Gazzy jerked open the back door. The kids piled into the van, Fang laying Ella on the middle seats and somehow managing to cram in the back with the others. The second the door slammed shut again, my mother stepped on the gas and we were out, speeding down the road that led away from the labs.
There were a few more shots fired—I heard one ricochet off the van’s trunk, but soon the guards realized that it was no use. I knew they’d probably try going after us in vehicles of their own, but by the time they did that, we’d be long gone.
The silence during the drive was awkward, to say the least. For the most part, everyone seemed too shell-shocked to speak. Or maybe they just didn’t think it was safe to in the company of a wanted terrorist. I stared out the window, a million questions running through my head, until I couldn’t stand it any longer.
“Mom?” I said hesitantly, glancing toward her. “…Where did you come from? How did you know—“
“You think I’d let you do this without being close enough to help you if you needed it?” Irina asked evenly. She remained focused on the road, but I saw her grip tighten on the steering wheel.
I stared at her, feeling bewildered and indignant at the same time. “Let me? Since when did I need your permission to do anything?”
“Damn it, Sydney!” She gritted out so violently that I was afraid she might swerve us off the road.“I told you. I told you not to get involved in this!”
“And I told you, I don’t care how dangerous this is!” I managed to say without sounding too surprised. “Lives are at stake here.”
Irina sighed, probably looking the most distressed I’ve ever seen her. “You need to learn that there’s a fine line between being selfless, and being stupid.” Her voice cracked and she broke off, still refusing to look at me.
I didn’t say anything to that, partly because I just realized the kids could hear every word of this argument, and partly because I had absolutely no idea why my mother was acting this way. I’d never seen her get this worked up before. The closest I could remember was the time when I was five years old. My dad had almost been killed on a job, and she had been hysterical. But that was when she was Laura Bristow, devoted wife and loving mother, not Irina Derevko, cold-hearted killer and wanted fugitive. This made no sense. I’d gone on plenty of life-threatening missions that she had been well-aware of before, so why was this any different?
Before I could think about it any longer, Max finally spoke from the back seat. “Where are we going?” She asked dryly.
I realized she had a point. I had no idea where Irina was planning on taking us. But she answered, without missing a beat, “I’m taking you to the Estonian safehouse the CIA set up. Your team will know to meet you there.”
“And how will they know that?” Fang asked skeptically.
Irina smirked. “Because I contacted them.” She said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. But it made me realize something: Vaughn could still hear me on my earpiece. I stiffened.
“…Vaughn?”
There was a pause, and then he answered. “Yeah, Syd?” He sounded stunned, and I couldn’t blame him.
“We’re okay. We’re with my mom.”
“…I know.”
I flinched at his tone. I hadn’t told anyone about my mom’s earpiece, not even him. But the idea that Irina had just happened to show up right at the moment we needed rescuing was way too farfetched to try to sell. Both Vaughn, and the entire CIA now knew Irina had been leading me through this mission.
He sighed. “It’s okay, we’ll talk later. We’re waiting for you at the safehouse.”
I turned to look out the window again, well-aware that my problems were far from over.

Haha thanks Dawnie!! I'm really glad you don't think it's predictable, I hate that too. Everything seems COMPLETELY obvious to me when I read over it, but I guess that's cause I'm writing it. Don't you hate it when you get super freaked out and nitpick-y over the stuff you write?
Lmao Tess, I totally thought that you said "she is AN evil man!" xD I was about to be like "Yup." And yeah, it was a pilot reference! Usually the pilots of shows seem like just introductions, but I LOVE the Alias pilot more than words can describe. It's seriously one of my favorite episodes. No clue why.
Oh wait, I know. It's because of that RED WIG! click, Favorite. Disguise. EVER.

Title Broken Wings. Author: Moi. Rating: PG-13ish for violence and language. Fandom: Maximum Ride / Alias Pairings: Max x Fang, Sydney x Vaughn, Ella x Iggy, and possible Irina x Jack. Chapter Summary: Everyone's safe again, but that doesn't mean things get easier. Ella hovers in an uneasy balance, and Max can't seem to find the answers she needs. Notes: Weeee. This chapter is kind of...I dunno. Museless? All of my muse is going to my other short fanfiction, which I'm kind of proud of, but it's not done yet. Anyway, I did like writing Fang in this one though. I don't know why. But who doesn't love Fang? xD AND OMG HE IS NOT EMO. GOSH. It scares me that people WANT him to be emo o.O.
Oh, and Rule Numbah One: if you ever need inspiration to write something intense or action-y or spy...y(that is SO not a word, it's not even funny xD), you listen to something off the Alias soundtrack. www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6HycyNB1dU I was JAMMIN'. xD
I was so tired that every bone in my body ached. Not that I’m whining or anything, but it had been a very, very long day, and frankly I just wanted to sleep.
But even more than that, I wanted answers. We had gone to that lab to steal a cure from Angel, and we’d found my sister. Those insane creeps had kept her prisoner for who knows how long, and they’d given her wings. That kind of cruelty disgusted me just thinking about it. Because having wings grafted on to your back was a lot different than being born with them. I would know. My brother, Ari—he’s dead now, but when the School gave him wings? I could see how much it hurt him.
All I could think now was, how in the world had Ella gotten involved in this? She was just a normal, sweet kid. She’d never done anything wrong. And my mom…if something had happened to Ella, why hadn’t my mom contacted me? Had they done something to her, too? If they had, it was all my fault. People who got close to me were generally the first to get hurt.
I just hoped that Ella would wake up soon. I could learn to live with what had happened to her if she just stayed alive.
I could tell that the rest of the Flock was equally tense, and probably even more restless. But me? I didn’t have it in me to be restless anymore. Which probably had something to do with why I’d just given up and gotten in the car with someone I couldn’t trust for a second.
Oh yeah, that, and the fact that my sister could have been dying and we were being chased by men with guns. But, you know, nothing new.
When I admitted it to myself, I had about a million and one questions for Irina. How involved had she been in the School? Had she known my dad? To what extent? Jeb, by the way, had refused to come with us once we had Ella secured. He said he had some “cleaning up to do”, and that he’d be in touch. I still don’t know if I can trust him.
And then, as if enough hadn’t happened to us already tonight, a flash of headlights illuminated the road ahead. By the looks of things, there were about three or four cars heading our way. Big ones.
My first instinct was to fly, but we were trapped our own car. Another reason I hated tiny, closed in spaces!
“Sydney,” Irina warned. “Take the gun.”
I saw Sydney reach under the seat, drawing out the gun Irina had used before. I exchanged a grim glance with Fang. If there was gonna be trouble, we still had a bit of fight left in us.
The cars screeched to a stop in front of us. We couldn’t get by, but that was fine by me. If we were stopping, I could get out of here and assess the threat.
Before anyone could blink, various people dressed in black were swarming out of the cars, weapons drawn, shouting something at us. This was not looking good. But then—
“Vaughn!” Sydney suddenly cried in recognition. I looked, and through the dark, I could definitely see him. It looked like the CIA had found us before we could find them. But then why did they have us at gunpoint?
…Oh, right. Maybe we should keep better company.
“Get out of the car.” Irina told us calmly. Nudge opened the side door warily, still trained on the agents.
Sydney turned around hesitantly. “Mom, don’t try anything. They really will shoot you.”
Irina shot her a look that could only be described as ‘amused’.
Okay, well, I wasn’t sticking around any longer. I hopped out after Nudge, and Gazzy after me. Fang and Iggy came out next, and worked together to gently get Ella out of the van. She was still unconscious.
“Guys?”
“Yeah. We got her.” Iggy said instantly, while Fang gave me a short nod.
I saw Agent Vaughn and Sydney hugging, and then he turned and came over to us. “Everyone alright?” He asked, looking around.
I motioned to Ella. “My sister’s not. We found her at the lab…they hurt her.” I told him.
Agent Vaughn looked like he was trying not to seem too surprised. Maybe he thought wings just ran in the family. “Okay,” He said evenly. “She’ll be fine. Come put her in the car.”
Great, more cars. But in her current state, I didn’t want to risk moving Ella around too much by flying with her. And there was no way I was leaving her side. Fang looked at me, and when I nodded slowly, he said something to Iggy and they began carrying her over to one of the CIA vans.
“Hey Max!” Nudge ran to catch up as I followed the guys. “Is Ella going to be okay?”
I looked into her concerned eyes and frowned. “I hope so.” I said truthfully.
While the agents got everything situated, I lurked over by the car Ella was riding in. I wasn’t quite ready to leave fresh air again just yet, but I felt like leaving her for too long would hurt her even worse.
Eventually, Fang came around and found me. We stood in silence for a long moment. I stared at the sky.
“So…” He said gruffly. “That was…”
“Crazy?” I supplied bluntly.
“Yeah.” He nodded, folding his arms and leaning against the car door. Typical Fang-posture.
I just shrugged and kicked a stone off the road. “I just can’t believe that after everything that’s happened, this…I mean, don’t you think it’s a pretty weird coincidence that Anna decides to go after my sister? What does she want with her?” I vented, finally staring Fang straight in the face.
His eyes gleamed. “I don’t know. But you know what? We’re going to find out. Maybe Ella can tell us something when she wakes up.”
When. He sounded so confident. I stared at him closely, trying to decide whether he meant it, or whether he was just trying to make me feel better. But the intensity in his dark gaze almost made me take a step back. It definitely made my heart beat a little faster.
I cleared my throat and looked away, trying to find something else to suddenly become very interested in. Luckily, it seemed that at the next van over, the spy family was having a cute little reunion.
Irina was being led, handcuffed, into one of the other vans. And supervising the whole process was Agent Bristow Sr. himself. When she got close enough, Irina paused and looked at him, smiling slyly.
“Hello, Jack.”
Jack just kind of gave her this death glare, and watched as she was pushed into the van. As the door slammed shut, Sydney approached hesitantly.
“Dad—“
“We’ll discuss this later.”
Remind me not to get involved in that.
“Looks like everyone’s taking off. I guess that’s our cue to get in the car.” Fang remarked quietly. I looked back at him, nodded without a word, and climbed into the car beside my sister.
It was a long, long way back to America. We slept most of the way back on the plane, but when we got to Los Angeles, I was still feeling kind of groggy.
I looked around the headquarters. Nudge was still asleep in a chair, while Fang was keeping silent watch over Gazzy and Angel. I turned to Iggy. “Ig? Can you stay with Ella for a minute?”
A few doctors had already examined her, and reported that she seemed pretty healthy. Now all that was left to do was wait until she woke up. Iggy nodded solemnly, and I thanked him before wandering over to where a crowd of agents had congregated.
“Director Dixon?” I asked, folding my wings at my sides. Dixon turned to look at me.
“What is it, Max?”
“Do you think…can you find a way to contact my mom?” I asked slowly.
Dixon glanced at Ella, and seemed to understand. “Of course. What’s her name?”
“Valencia Martinez.” I shifted from foot to foot restlessly. Dixon nodded.
“I’ll have someone get on it immediately.” He said, before walking away briskly.
I heaved a sigh, praying to whoever would listen to a mutant bird kid that my mom was okay, and turned back to my Flock. I stood for a moment, just watching them, not quite ready to converse with anyone yet.
But, as luck would have it, I was going to. A minute later, Sydney fell in beside me.
“Hey. Are you alright?”
She was probably trying to analyze me or something, so I managed to keep my voice blank and quiet when I replied.
“Yep. I’m good.”
She followed my gaze to Ella. “That was your Dad back there, right? Jeb?” She prompted.
I shrugged. “My dad. Not Ella’s.” I clarified. Not like it really mattered, but I couldn’t help adding out of pure spite, “He knew she was there, though. And he didn’t tell any of us.”
Sydney looked taken aback. “He told you yesterday, though.” She pointed out. “That has to count for something.”
I didn’t want to sound skeptical, but trusting Jeb right now was just something I couldn’t afford to do. “Yeah. Maybe because he had no other choice.” I glared at the floor, as if it was responsible for all my problems.
Sydney was quiet for a long moment. I was almost expecting her to just walk away. Then, “I get it, you know.”
Oh, sure. Us bird-kids were just so relatable to. “Uh-huh?” I challenged, looking at her.
She forced a weak smile. “I mean about your dad. I grew up thinking my mom was dead. When I found out that she was alive, my dad told me that she was a spy for the KGB, and that everything…marrying him, having me…it was all just a plan to steal CIA secrets. I didn’t think I’d ever trust her again after that.”
“It’s not really the same, though.” I replied, unconvinced. Sydney betrayed her curiosity by cocking an eyebrow slightly, and I went on. “Your mom’s still your mom. Yesterday? She did what any good mom would have done. I can’t really see Jeb doing something like that.”
Sydney fell silent again, but this time, it was Dixon that interrupted us. He looked pretty serious.
“Valencia Martinez,” He began. “Was a case from earlier this year. Her daughter was kidnapped by paid forces a months ago…but until now, we never thought to connect it to you…” He set his jaw. “Or Anna.”
I frowned. What did that mean. “So? Is she okay?” I prompted.
Dixon nodded, and I felt a surge of relief. “She’s in a protection program. The kidnappers left a note threatening her when they took Ella. The FBI felt that her research was too important to risk her being captured as well.”
“The FBI?” I asked urgently. “Where’d they take her?”
Dixon took a breath. “We don’t know.”
Right at that moment, all I could think was: bull. “What do you mean you don’t know?” I snapped impatiently. “What kind of protection program are you running?”
“I’ve just told you, it isn’t us. It’s the FBI.” Dixon repeated wearily. “We can’t just demand information from their classified databases. It would take weeks, maybe longer, to get that kind of clearance.”
You know those rare moments when you feel like cussing the Director of the CIA out? No? I guess you can’t really sympathize then. I glared at him. “This isn’t just some case. This is my mom! She could be the only one who knows why Anna took Ella!” I spat.
Dixon nodded slowly. “Yes, but at the rate we’d be able to get in contact with her, we’d sooner be able to track down Espinosa and ask her ourselves.”
Sydney looked up. “Do you have any leads?”
“Not yet. But we’re doing everything we can.” Dixon assured.
“I want to help.” Sydney said immediately. “If you can find one of Anna’s contacts or suppliers, I could try to get information—“
“No.” A voice spoke from behind us.
We both turned around to see Jack Bristow striding towards us. He didn’t look happy…at all. “I’ve cleared this already with Dixon,” He growled, nodding to the Director. “Sydney, you’re off the case.”
“What?!” spluttered Sydney immediately. “You can’t just—“
“I think you’ll find that I can.” Jack stated calmly. “For the safety of this agency. I said from the beginning that you were too emotionally involved.”
Sydney whipped around to face Dixon. “You cleared this?” She demanded angrily.
Dixon looked at her sadly. “Syd, I’m sorry. But working with your mother the way you did broke protocol—not to mention several laws. I can’t risk this case like that again.”
Looking positively outraged, Sydney opened her mouth to argue, but I beat her to it.
“If it weren’t for that Irina chick, we’d all be dead. So yeah, guys, thanks for the help on that by the way. It really made things so much easier when your helicopter blew up.” I said sarcastically. “And you are definitely not throwing us in that safehouse with some random suit-and-tie—“
“Soon, the safehouse will no longer be a concern.” Jack broke in, turning to me briskly. “Once our analyzing team has checked to make sure the syringe Batchelder gave you is legit, it should only take Angel a week or so to recover. I’m sure you can hold out until then.”
If I got patronized one more time, I was going to slap someone. And I definitely couldn’t take any more of this. Shooting him one last glare, I huffed, “You know what? I’m done.”, turned on my heel, and stormed away.
Only, where do you storm off to when you’re in the middle of CIA headquarters? The best I could do was run outside into the hall. Not my best dramatic exit.
I glared around furiously, looking for something I could kick, when I heard someone move behind me. I whipped around furiously, only to be faced with Fang. He was staring at me calmly.
“I’ve had it.” I wasted no time in telling him. “As soon as Angel’s okay, we are so freakin’ out of here. We’ll take Ella with us, I don’t care.”
“Max—“ He started, but I wasn’t done.
“It’s ridiculous how they run things in this place! I could get more done in my sleep! They’re not any closer to catching Anna. They won’t even contact my mom, just because of some stupid legal issue—“
“Max…”
“And they have to be so frickin’ controlling about everything! Sydney’s dad just came out of nowhere like—“
“MAX.”
I blinked, startled by Fang’s unusually raised voice. It didn’t take me long to come to my senses, though, and I glared at him. “Geez. What?”
Fang sighed deeply. “Ella’s awake.”

Omigosh I know, right? Fang is SOOO much fun to write. And this next chapter in my MR FanFic (which I tried to start today but didn't get all that far, stupid muse) is gonna be from his point of view. Sort of. I dunno if it's gonna be 1st person or 3rd person yet. But it's all about Fang. Fang Fang Fang. ^^ Like you said, who doesn't love Fang? And yes, he is SO not emo! He just prefers wearing dark colors because, oh I don't know, he BLENDS IN with his surroundings. Fang does NOT like sticking out. He has black wings, black hair, super dark eyes, so he figures all he needs is black clothes and he's all but invisible (well... technically NOW he can become invisible for real, probably BECAUSE of that whole blending in thing). So yeah. Totally not emo. And he is NOT GAY! Why do people keep saying he needs to come out of the closet?! Name one thing about him that makes him seem REMOTELY gay. NOTHING. If you asked him to put guyliner on, he'd probably say eff you and fly off. So yeah. NOT GAY. And what's more, with IGGY? Are you freaking KIDDING me?! Neither he NOR Iggy are gay, and CERTAINLY not with each other. So there!
Okay, starting to get off topic and a little ranty, but it make me mad when I see that sort of thing because they just don't get it at all! They're obviously not true fans like us. -stands with hands on hips while cape blows out from behind in wind- ^^ xD Oookay, getting really RANDOM now. ANYWAY, to get to the point, awesome chapter. I love Fang. Jack's an ass. Oh em gee Ella. ^^ Oh, and IGGY SQUEE!!! Love Iggy too! -hugs Iggy-

WHOOOAAA I know. That is seriously the weirdest thing ever. Like, I'm not gonna start on slash fics, like go ahead and have your fun or whatever people, but Iggy and Fang is just plain weird. REALLY weird, actually. Especially since, uhm, FANG IS IN LOVE WITH MAX AND IGGY HITS ON EVERY GIRL HE SEES. xD
Oh, and I'd just like to say that Jack can be a complete MEANIE, but it's just cause he's freaked out. There are times when he really can be completely sweet, but he's really over-protective of Syd and INSANELY bitter at times when it comes to Irina. Tsk.
