"I'm really worried about him, Mom."
The familiar sound of Gentleheart's quiet and sincere voice was the only one that filled the ears of the senior warrior Dawnfur. The clearing was bustling with morning activity as patrols were gathered and launched. Luckily that meant that the mother-daughter conversation wouldn't likely be over heard. The tortoiseshell she-cat looked over that Destinystep who was asleep beneath Highrock. "Don't worry honey. It's only sunhigh and he's had a rough couple of days. I'm sure he's exhausted." she reassured the tabby warrior beside her.
Gentleheart only shook her head. "No, not that. Last night I woke up to the sound of him thrashing around. Nightmares, I'm sure of it. He's just been so... depressed. I'm really beginning to worry." She didn't mention that the tom cat had also broken down along with herself the other day. She didn't want to possibly embarrass him, or even worse, end their friendship over it. He was a very proud cat.
"I'm sure he'll be alright." Dawnfur cojoled. "He's going through a tough time. But atleast he's got someone like you to help look after him." She didn't say it aloud, but she couldn't help but smile to herself as she stared at the tom across the clearing, a knowing look in her green eyes. Gentleheart glanced at her mother suspisiously, trying to decifer the expression.
"Oh Mom, come on! We grew up together for StarClan's sake!" she exclaimed when she caught the meaning. Dawnfur just smiled and replied, "I didn't say anything." But it was obvious what she meant. Gentleheart just looked away, feeling her skin warm beneath her fur dispite the cold leaf-bare weather. Dawnfur's gaze traveled to the warrior that had broken away from another group and was making his way toward Destinystep. She narrowed her eyes, flattened her ears against her head and hissed. Catching the young cat's attention, a warning growl escaped from her throat, telling him to keep away. The cat ducked his head and turned away, returning to his own patrol. Only then did Dawnfur relax.
Being a well respected warrior, Dawnfur's word seemed law among younger cats. If she told them to keep away, they would be forced to do so. It was respect, and a little fear. She had gone through alot and was one of the oldest warriors in the clan, so no one dared back talk her. And now she looked toward Nightstar's den, furrowing her brow in frustration. "When I find that tom cat I'm going to give him a piece of my mind. Leaving his son alone in such a state without so much as a comforting word. He's been ignoring him ever since Shadeheart left. No father should treat his son that way, especially when they've both lost so much." Gentleheart could only nod in agreement.
