It was early morning. A big gray tomcat strode silently through the woods. His eyes were narrow as he gazed around warily. Any cat would be able to tell that he was tense and alert: his ears were perked up and there was visible tension in his shoulders. Rimestar was patrolling the Tallpines on his own today. You'd think the ThunderClan leader would be calmer in his own territory, but this wasn't the case right now. Tree-Cut Place was quiet and eventful most of the year...it was far enough away from any Clan borders that no rivals tried to make a Claim on it. Usually it was just a forest of pine trees. But this was summer, and the two-legs annually came here to cut down some of the evergreen trees. Rimestar didn't understand why he did it, but he was familiar with the custom by now. It was annoying and it scared a lot of the prey away, which was why he hadn't come here today to hunt.
No, this was just a patrol. He didn't really expect trouble, but you could never be too careful when Two-Legs were involved. It made his hackles bristle angrily to look around and see the forlorn stumps where healthy trees had once grown. Those trees had once been home to prey that ThunderClan depended on. The Two-Legs were disrupting everything! Rimestar knew that he shouldn't really be too worried. ThunderClan had plenty of other prey sources in the summer time. But now that RiverClan had won Sunningrocks, he was especially protective of the rest of his territory.
The harsh voices of the Two-Legs made his ears prick. They didn't really do much work this late in green-leaf, but it seemed like they were always around. Rimestar eyed them carefully. Even he didn't dare to get to close to them. He'd heard stories of cats being taken by the wandering creatures before, and he wasn't about to find out if they were true. The ThunderClan leader hopped up on a stump many fox-lengths away from the scene and was content to watch. Anyone who knew the leader well would be able to tell that he was annoyed from the way his tail twitched in annoyance.
"Can't they just leave ThunderClan in peace?" The tomcat growled to himself. His claws scraped the worn stump and he lifted his head to scent the air. Tallpines wasn't very far away from Twolegplace, and sometimes curious kittypets were attracted by the Two-Legs that worked here. Rimestar didn't like the idea of an intruder on ThunderClan territory, so he just wanted to make sure. 'That's what a patrol is, after all.' He thought, wondering how long he should stay here. If he wanted to get away from the camp for awhile, there were probably quieter places to go than this.
But Rimestar still wasn't satisfied. He didn't trust what was going on here, nor did he like it.
