Warning: This story is a result of utter boredom and muselessness and...stuff. So...it'll probably end up sucking, or not being finished. Probably both. Might even be a one shot. Truthfully, I have no plot in mind right now, but I'm completely bored right now. I'm winging it. No one has to waste their lives reading, I just don't have a notebook handy and...here we go!
Oh yeah, and it's probably going to be Alternate-universe typed too.
Anyway...
Tension seemed to crackle in the tropical air as the four trudged down the sandy beach, each lost in their own thoughts. They were probably nearing the camp now, she'd guess, although she could hardly say for sure. Pondering this, she lifted her gaze, eyes an icy blue to match the nearby sea. Her heart seemed to skip a beat as she noticed them, the faint outlines of various people going about their business around the tents they had set up. Her nerves rose, but she pushed these feelings of anxiety, glancing at the man that walked beside her.
Jack Sheperds's brown eyes were narrowed against the salty wind, and he said nothing as he led the way toward the beach. Indeed, no one seemed willing to break the silence that had fallen on the small group like an anvil. Not Jack; their silent leader, not Sayid; stone-faced and wary, and not Kate; who seemed nearly as tense as Juliet herself.
And then...
"It's Jack!"
Juliet didn't recognize the voice at once, but a Korean woman had noticed her presence, and was bounding toward them at a careful pace. Her call had gotten the attention of the other survivors, who were all murmuring in surprise and disbelief as the doctor approached the people he had lived with for months before his capture.
She recalled the day well, for it had only been a few weeks ago. Yet, after everything they'd been through, it felt like a lifetime. Juliet remembered speaking to him for the first time, nothing but a sheet of glass between them. He had been so angry and frustrated. He hadn't trusted her. It was ironic, she reflected, for now Jack seemed to be the only one who did trust her.
Juliet paused, allowing Sayid and Kate to brush past her and re-unite with their fellow survivors. It was a whirl of happy emotions, but all she could do was watch as the Korean woman from earlier embraced Jack joyfully, while Kate and Sawyer exchanged an awkward hug. Even Sayid allowed a smile. No one seemed to notice her, or not yet at least. Juliet averted her gaze from the scene, distractedly brushing a strand of golden-blonde hair away from her face and behind her ear. It would only be a matter of time...
"Hey!"
The familiar drawl snapped the blonde woman back to reality. Sawyer was glaring over Kate's shoulder at Juliet, and soon piercing glares from the others turned her way.
"What's she doing here?" He added, an accusing note edging his voice. He seemed to speak for the other castaways, for at once murmurs of confusion broke out. Juliet knew that not many of them would recognize her, but it was no wonder that Sawyer had.
"Relax, Sawyer." Jack spoke calmly now, and Juliet could tell that he was trying to be patient with the Southerner. "She's not going to hurt you. Any of you."
"But who is she?" A young woman with curled blonde hair spoke up, cradling a baby fearfully. Juliet recognized her at once, for she had once been a captive of the Others. This could only be Claire, although Juliet had never met her.
"I'll tell you who she is,"
"Sawyer-" Kate tried to calm him, but he had already moved aggressively toward Juliet, pausing a few feet away before whipping around to face the other survivors.
"Blondie here is of Them. An Other. I saw her with them. We all did." At Sawyer's words, the survivors gave a collective outbreak of questions and fearful murmurings.
Juliet grimaced at his words. From the moment she had decided to leave the Others' village with Jack, she had known this would be coming. Perhaps it would have been better to stay behind. Even so, she managed to give Sawyer a cold glare, opening her moth to provide some kind of protest. But what could she say? She couldn't deny the fact that she had been partly responsible for keeping Sawyer, Kate, and Jack captive. Before she had a chance to reply, however, Jack leaped to her rescue.
"She's not 'one of them'--not anymore."
Sawyer scoffed. "So what, she got voted off the island?" He remarked sarcastically.
Before this moment, Juliet had already suspected that there had been some kind of tension between Jack and Sawyer, probably because they both shared affections for Kate. She also knew from experience that Jack didn't have the coolest temper in the world, and so she was slightly surprised when he didn't snap back. Instead, the doctor gave a soft sigh.
"Listen, we didn't escape. We were left. Don't ask me why, but one day, the Others decided to leave. We don't know where they've gone...why they've gone, but they left all of us. Me, Kate, Sayid...and Juliet, too."
Sawyer gave an exasperated grunt. "I thought you were supposed to be smart, Doc. They probably left her so she could spy on us!" he pointed out.
Juliet shifted awkwardly. She hated being talked about as if she weren't present. Still, the conversation continued.
"I trust her! Isn't that enough?" Demanded Jack, growing slightly angry now.
"Well, ain't that reassuring?" The other man sneered back.
"Sawyer!Quit it." Kate cut in again, sharper this time. Slightly surprised, Sawyer paused, and turned to look at her.
"Freckles?" He questioned her quietly, but Kate's focus had turned to the other castaways.
"When the others caught us, me and Sawyer were put in cages. Jack...was not." She began, speaking loudly and clearly. " I don't know what happened to him, but whatever it was, it was enough to make him trust Juliet. And I trust Jack. I'm also very tired right now, and I'm sure they are too, so why don't we save the questioning for later?"
Only silence greeted her speech. Not even Sawyer spoke, but merely gave Kate a wary stare. She did not return his gaze, for hers was now turned to Juliet. A moment of tension passed between them. Juliet knew that Kate didn't like her much, and the feeling was mutual. After all, only two days ago, they had been handcuffed together in the middle of the jungle, and needless to say that hadn't gone well. They had fought, both verbally and physically, and Kate had dislocated Juliet's shoulder. This fight had been interrupted by the arrival of a large and terrifying creature, which had sent them both running. By the end of the day, they were both very muddy and very tired, and over all, had had about enough of each other...especially when Kate had learned that Juliet had the key to the handcuffs.
Still, she couldn't help feeling slightly surprised that the other woman had defended her...or more precisely, defended Jack. At this thought, Juliet felt a prick of annoyance...and perhaps jealously. The moment didn't last long, however, for as the crowd began to reluctantly break away, Kate turned and slipped after Sawyer.
