Muhahaha. I decided to start a Silverwing fanfiction, since there are zero active Silverwing RPGs and I needed a vent for my batty muse. I'm evil. This is going to be a very fun story to write. You'll see why as it goes on. Actually, if anyone wants to help, with ideas or even co-writing, they can xD. Two notes before I start.
1. You should know, this is centric around my original character, Sabina. Though, of course the book characters will be in this. One in particular. But alas, I mustn't give anything away.
2. This is more TV-verse than book-verse. Which means its more loyal to the show than the books, simply because I have more muse for that right now since I've just seen it. So if some things don't fit, it's probably because this is about the happenings of the show than the book.
Prologue
As the sun set and its golden rays cast their last, fading forms on the slowly darkening earth, a creature stirred in the trees. Bright green eyes fixed upon the horizon, anxiously awaiting nightfall. Sabina had been waiting anxiously for a while now. As soon as the sun set, the colony would be able to take off. To head home again. Although Brutus, the owl General, had granted the bats the right to fly by sunlight once again, the head elder of the Sorrelwing bats had chosen to wait until nightfall. It would be then that the colony would feel most comfortable leaving Hibernaculum. Some of them were anxious of leaving the ancient hibernating ground, Sabina knew. But she wasn't.
This hadn't been her first time hibernating, for she was now a young adult, and one of the more attractive females of her colony at that. But each spring, when the Sorrelwings would wake from their sleeping state, Sabina always grew restless and eager to return home. Jet black wings rustled impatiently. Had time always moved this slow, and she'd never noticed?
Sudden movement interrupted her thoughts as a lone, dark shape landed beside her. Her pointed black ears twitched, and she glanced quickly at the newcomer. Recognizing him in an instant, Sabina relaxed and returned her gaze to the horizon. This was Cypress, one of the bats in her colony. In fact, one of the few she could truthfully call a friend.
"Hello, Cypress." Sabina murmured, distracted.
" 'Evening," The Sorrelwing remarked. A cool wind brushed the lands, sending a slight shiver down the two bats' spines. Cypress narrowed his eyes and fluffed his reddish brown fur. "Winter's grasp has not yet left us." He remarked. "Perhaps we are leaving Hibernaculum too soon."
Sabina eyed him, frowning slightly. "I hope not. The sooner we make it it home, the better." She answered, rather grumpily. Her companion chuckled at this.
"You are restless."
"No kidding." She glowered, then shook her head and sighed. "I'm sorry for snapping," She apologized quickly. "It's just...I am restless. A bit homesick, too."
Cypress gazed at her for a moment, before sympathetically brushing his wing against hers and linking their claws briefly. "I expect we'll be leaving soon. Don't worry."
A hint of a smile flashed across Sabina's face, almost bittersweet as her friend’s wing brushed against her own. The contrast was painfully obvious there. Cypress’s wing was a warm, rich shade of brown, like every Sorrelwing’s was supposed to be. But while Sabina was a full-blooded Sorrelwing of normal size for a female her age, her fur was pitch black. It was a trait that made her stand out from the rest of her colony, and it had always been an awkward subject.
And so, instinctively, she pulled away from this contact, pulling it off by giving her pelt a casual shake, as if she hadn’t noticed. “Thanks. Listen, I’m going to hunt for awhile. I’ll be back before we leave. See you later?” Her words didn’t give much of an opportunity for Cypress to offer to join her, which was the intention. Cypress looked mildly bemused, but nodded.
With a soft sigh, the black Sorrelwing inched away from the male, giving her wings room to spread. In an instant, she had dipped and taken flight. Ebony wings caught the breeze and lifted gently into the sky. Perhaps she shouldn’t have left like that. It was just…Cypress was doing that usual understanding, sympathetic thing he did when she’d go into one of her rants, and the wing thing, though it had been a mere friendly gesture, had shaken her. Her jaw clenched. Well, she’d hunt for awhile, and return later. When the colony began their journey, she’d make it up to him.
But fate, with its cruel ways, had other plans for the female.
----
Dark wings hid most of the bat's massive form as he hung from the tree's branch, engulfed in shadow. Wolfish eyes glared hatefully into the depths of the river below. These waters...had ruined everything. That Silverwing had ruined everything. He'd been this close to claiming the northern lands as his own, becoming the king of the Birds, Bats, and Beasts. But then he'd been reduced to a drowned rat when Shade Silverwing had thrown them both into the waterfall.
But there was still time. Precious time. Those fools thought him dead, but thanks to those wretched humans, he'd survived. It'd been humiliating relying on them, roosting all winter in their warm sheds. But he had survived. And now, he had his chance to fulfull his vow to Zotz. He'd find a way back north, to the bat colonies. He'd kill Shade Silverwing.
With a long, slow grin of his fangs, the Vampyrum took flight.
